Leeds Castle Unveils New Venue Battel Hall

Leeds Castle has officially announced the launch of their exclusive new venue Battel Hall. Opening its doors on an exclusive hire basis for the first time in its near 700-year history, the 14th century country-house is now available to book for countryside escapes, intimate weddings and celebrations.

Emerging from an extensive two-year restoration, Battel Hall is a fine example of Kentish architecture of the middle ages, and much of the property’s original features remain. From the arrow-slit windows, intricately carved stone corbels and rare decorative laver (or basin) just inside the front door, its distinctive character and historical features have been conserved and amplified by the work of interior designer Francesca Rowan Plowden, who has helped transform the property into a stylish manor. But perhaps Battel Hall’s most unusual feature is the medieval ‘retable’ in the hallway – a replica of the same painting that was discovered during Battel Hall’s restoration. The painting displays seven saintly figures; each bearing deliberate damage to their faces, and is one of only six known extant painted alter pieces of the medieval period. The original painting has since been restored at Cambridge University and is now on public display in the Castle chapel.

The team at Leeds Castle were pleased to hold Battel Hall’s first launch event for bloggers and journalists on Friday 20th April, some of whom were lucky enough to be the first to stay in the property after its refurbishment; Hotel Expert Fiona Duncan even went on to label Battel Hall an “enchanting, calming and spoiling house”, in her recent article for The Telegraph.

Those attending the launch enjoyed insightful talks from the Castle’s curator, Annie Kemkaran-Smith, and Battel Hall’s interior designer, Francesca.

We always hoped to create a level of 5-star luxury with the interiors at Battel Hall,” said Francesca. “However, I was keen for it not to feel intimidating or have a lack of soul. I hope that the house feels like a welcoming home away from home – but yet a treat to stay in.”

Battel Hall is available for weddings, events and exclusive hire – be it for an idyllic weekend away in the country or for a celebration with friends and family. Sat on the edge of the Leeds Castle estate, guests will have access to the Castle’s parkland, formal gardens, thrilling falconry displays, maze, punting on the moat, and much more. With five en-suite bedrooms, three glorious reception rooms, a marquee terrace and beautifully landscaped gardens, the property truly epitomises traditional English country-house style.
